DIY Textured Wall Art: How to Repurpose an old canvas

Black Textured Modern Organic DIY Canvas Art : Reusing Old Canvas Painting
Looking for an easy and budget-friendly way to create stunning wall art? In this tutorial, I’ll show you how I made a DIY textured wall art piece using an old canvas painting. It’s a great way to repurpose something you no longer love while keeping it out of the landfill. Plus, this project cost me only $15!
Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just starting out, this project is simple, fun, and customizable. Let’s dive in!

Materials Needed

Here’s what you’ll need to create your own textured wall art:

Step 1: Prepare Your Canvas

Before starting don’t forget to cover the area with a drop clothor an old blanket.

If you’re repurposing an old canvas like I did, start by priming it. For a brand-new canvas, you can skip this step and go straight to applying your base color.

Since my canvas had a dark background, I applied three coats of primer to create a smooth, clean base for the design. This step helps ensure your final piece looks polished.

Step 2: Apply the Base Color

Once the primer dried, I applied my base color using a paint roller. I used an “oops” paint I found at Lowe’s, which was an affordable option. The shade I chose was close to white with a hint of beige, offering a subtle contrast. Since we plan to paint the walls white in the future, this neutral tone works perfectly in our space.

Step 3: Add Texture

Now for the fun part—texture! I used joint compound and a putty knife to create patterns on the canvas. This step allows you to get creative! You can experiment with abstract lines, waves, or any design that fits your style.
Keep in mind that the joint compound needs time to dry completely. For me, it took over 24 hours because I applied a thicker layer. The thicker the texture, the longer it will take to dry, so plan accordingly.

Step 4: Add the Final Details

Once the texture was fully dry, I added the final touch: black paint. Using a paintbrush, I applied the paint randomly until I was happy with the look. This step adds depth and dimension to the piece, making it truly unique.

Step 5: Hang and Enjoy!

After the paint dried, my DIY textured wall art was ready to hang. I decided to place it in my entryway, which I recently gave a quick makeover. I’ll be sharing more about the entryway transformation in an upcoming video, so stay tuned!
